Effects of Salmonella on Pets and People
Salmonella contamination poses risks both to animals consuming the products, and to humans handling them; any time someone touches contaminated surfaces after coming in contact with these items they should thoroughly wash their hands afterwards and ensure any surfaces touched have been disinfected afterward. No reported illnesses related to recalled cat food to date.
Salmonella infections in cats may manifest themselves with lethargic behavior and symptoms of diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting; or sometimes only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Uninfected but otherwise healthy cats may act as carriers for infection of other animals or humans; should your cat have consumed one of the recalled products and have these symptoms, please consult a veterinarian immediately.
People exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella infections can lead to more serious ailments like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms – consumers exhibiting these signs after coming in contact with this product should contact healthcare providers immediately.
