Nestle Purina PetCare Company announced on February 8, 2023, it is recalling certain lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D, in accordance with a press release issued.
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, ingestion of elevated levels may result in health issues depending on both its level and length of exposure, according to a press release. Signs of vitamin D toxicity in your pup could include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urine output and excessive drooling leading up to renal (kidney) dysfunction and even kidney dysfunction.
Purina announced it is taking this measure after receiving two separate notifications regarding two dogs showing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity after eating their diet, to date. Once off of it, each of these dogs recovered quickly.
Specifics about the affected food
The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States via valid prescription through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and select retailers with the capability of verifying prescriptions. Bags marked with any of these UPC or production codes should be immediately discarded according to Purina:

Pet owners who have purchased bags of the products listed above should immediately stop feeding and discard it in a secure container that other animals, including wildlife, cannot reach. If their dog exhibits symptoms such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite or thirst/urination after eating this diet they should contact their veterinarian immediately.
Retail partners should immediately remove and destroy any affected Purina pet care product from their inventory, no other Purina pet care products are affected.
